Brethren are a small but significant component of Evangelical Christianity. There are congregations of Open (otherwise termed Christian or Independent) Brethren in at least 130 countries in the world, in more than 25,000 congregations, attended on any Sunday by some 2 million or more people.

Until recently, interest in Brethren history focused on its earliest days in the British Isles. Interest is now beginning to widen, however, and there is recognition that the middle and recent years of the movement are at least as interesting as its origins. Many of the contributions to this volume reflect this welcome development.

The influence of Brethren on Evangelicalism has been significant through their ecclesiology, their distinctive eschatological interpretations, their principle that Christian workers can and should 'live by faith', and the significant influence that individuals nurtured in the Brethren have had in other groupings and in para-church bodies. These are among the themes explored in this volume of papers, stemming from a conference held in Germany in 2005. They include a number of aspects of the history of the Brethren in Germany, a subject little known outside that country.
